Mountain Building

Greywacke is the ocean-bottom sludge that once lay between England and Scotland, and now forms the Southern Uplands. At that hill range's eastern end, the sea carves out a nice cross-section to show how the layers have been lifted upright and bent about by the collision of the two continents.
