The New Red Sandstone, laid down in a hot, dry desert of 250 million years ago – a time when the UK lay just north of the Equator in the zone now occupied by the Sahara. This cliff at St Bees Head shows swirly patterns of former sand dunes and more ordered layers of flash flood wadis
